Very nice article just published today about the ongoing “microprocessor wars” featuring ARM vs Intel: http://www.insidermonkey.com/blog/can-intel-corporation-intc-do-to-arm-holdings-plc-adr-armh-what-it-did-to-powerpc-86429/

The move from PowerPC microprocessors (made by IBM) to Intel’s made Apple’s computers much more appealing, with reduced costs. Since then, Apple’s market share in the PC world has increased. Apple is now a threat to the established Wintel (Windows + Intel), growing from 1% market share at the early 2000s to a recent 20%:

The similarities and differences are clear, but this time Intel is in second place battling ARM for the mobile microprocessor market. With Windows devices being built over Intel and ARM alike, and Android + iOS being sold on ARM, this is going to be a huge battle for Intel. But, how did ARM come around and become so successful?

The reason why ARM is the leader in MP sales is not only RISC architecture vs the more battery consuming CISC used by Intel. Also the integration with the manufacturers, so it basically provides the designs (IP) and gives freedom to modify and choose where to manufacture the products. For example, Samsung manufactures its devices, purchasing ARM’s designs and tailoring them to their hardware and their Android version. However, Apple lets manufacturers build their micros, choosing different companies from China or perhaps somewhere else in the world in a recent future. Our company is more related to the ARM model, even though we work with Intel and some other major customers. We provide the design, keeping in mind the manufacturing process at all times, but outsourcing it to the best available provider depending on the needs of our customers. The battle is tough, and like the article posts, Intel will have a hard time defeating ARM without using some of its innovations as their weapons. Just like Apple couldn’t compete with Windows without the Intel microprocessors, at some point you have to choose which battles to loose.
